Epitonic Saki Session

Here’s a live set that we played at Saki last summer!

With her siren voice and energetic mic moves, Flores handily commands a room in ways that put most swaggering young men to shame. Given the pedigree of her rhythm section behind her (Nathan played with the Ponys and Tom is from Daily Void), Rebecca isn’t the only force to be reckoned with in this band. It takes a group of musicians this good to pull off the “less is more” approach to pop songwriting these guys wield so capably.

Listen to it at Epitonic!

Loud Loop Press Interview

May 5, 2011; 4:11 pm

Becca talks about songwriting, gear, musical influences, and stuff…

“Take Five” focuses on Chicago’s ever-growing music scene by giving you insight to the city’s best local acts via the best source possible: the artists themselves. Here is the latest installment featuring Tyler Jon Tyler.

If Tyler Jon Tyler were a kid in your high school he’d be the cool one everyone likes; who doesn’t try too hard; who mixes among the jocks, deadbeats, and nerds with an ease you might consider annoying if you didn’t already like him so damn much. The three-piece’s no-frills guitar pop and punk attitude is so immediate and charming it’s almost impossible, no matter what your musical affliction, not to enjoy.

In the fall, the group released its debut, self-titled LP to a multitude of positive reviews. They are currently on the road and returning to Chicago today to play Beauty Bar before going back out in June to tour with Times New Viking. We recently caught up with lead singer and guitarist Rebecca Valeriano-Flores to ask her about the dynamic of the group, what gear the members dig, and what they do when instruments aren’t in their hands.

Check out the interview on Loud Loop Press!

Shameless, reviews, interview

April 4, 2011; 9:46 pm

Chicago Reader’s Gossip Wolf:

TYLER JON TYLER front woman Rebecca Flores tells Gossip Wolf the band is about to embark on its first tour. The garage-pop trio will head east at the end of April, with dates in D.C., Philly, and the Big Apple. To get a hairy earful of their music, just turn on a TV! Showtime’s Shameless, a family drama set in Chicago, recently featured a cut from the band’s 2009 TROUBLE IN MIND seven-inch, “Faster Than Light.” It soundtracks a bittersweet scene where some young ‘uns wrap up a stay in jail by getting picked up outside a cop shop. A song by trouble-making kids in a show about trouble-making kids? That’s some shameless synchronicity!

ifrymineinbutter.com:

This is the kind of band that I wished littered every other suburb’s garages. Adorable, slightly pissed, and catchy as that stinkin’ cold that knocked me on my butt for three days straight. Blogs are knocking each other over to fling comparisons at these kids, but forget all that because the songs are really, really good and I think Tyler Jon Tyler are more than the sum of their influences.

musicforants.com:

While Tyler Jon Tyler’s setup is minimal, it’s certainly not simple. They make the most of what they have, because when you have so little everything is essential. The interplay between the band means there is always something to draw your focus. Whether it’s the jangly, cavernous guitar sound, the anxious energy of the vocals, the moments where the bass gets to carry the melody, or the toms pushing the songs forward, the band makes sure everything fits into place.

Chicago Tribune interviewed us, read the whole thing here:

The Logan Square-based trio Tyler Jon Tyler may feature some old hands — Nathan Jerde from beloved garage outfit The Ponys and Tom Cassling (ex-Daily Void) — but it’s the newbie up front that defines the band’s sound. Rebecca Flores, the 24-year-old singer/guitarist for group hardly sounds like a beginner — she is a natural lyricist and has an easy way with pure pop hooks. Tyler Jon Tyler has recently released a self-titled album — one of the most accomplished local debuts in recent years — which showcases how powerful a simple pop sound can be. The album has (rightly) won the trio a wave of adulation, though critics struggle to categorize it — Garage? Pop? Punk? All of the above? We’d wager the latter option…
